Educational Philosophy and Experience
Nora was fortunate to have found her passion for working with children early in her life. They began as an assistant ballet teacher when she was 12 and continued to develop and hone her craft. They began teaching at University Primary School through UIUC, followed by multiple public preschool teaching positions.
She believes that all children can and should be included in the classroom setting, striving to provide an inclusive and neurodivergent affirming environment for children and families. She became proficient in her ability to support children in learning to question and explore projects in-depth. Over many years teaching preschool in an inquiry based classroom they were given opportunities to teach graduate assistants, student teacher and volunteers how to create a loving and supportive environment which reflects best practices in early childhood. This includes using practices sometimes viewed as radical including the use of gender neutral pronouns for young children, discussion of sexuality, gender as a social construct, dialogues about racial inequalities, gender stereotypes, consent and challenging the "good" vs "bad" narratives reinforced by society, extensive conversations about feelings and support of social emotional development. The means a focus on the imagination, creation of art through movement, dramatic play and scientific exploration!
